Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of hypertonic saline (5% sodium chloride) soaked peeling combined with mitomycin C (MMC) in the treatment of pterygium. Methods According to the operation method,104 cases (124 eyes) with primary pterygiums were divided into two groups:hypertonic saline soaked peeling combined with MMC group (group A,53 cases,64 eyes) and pure excision group (group B,51 cases,60 eyes). All cases were followed up for 12 months, and then compared the recurrence rate and epithelia recovering time of comeal wound. Results The recurrence rate was 7.81% in group A,(5 of 64 eyes were recurred); the recurrence rate was 26.67% in group B,(16 of 60 eyes were recurred),the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (x2=7.8255,P =0.005).The mean time of epithelial healing was (4.64±0.98) days in group A,while (5.10±1.05) days in group B,the difference of epithelial healing time between the two groups was statistically significant (t =2.514,P =0.013).No severe complications were found in two groups. Conclusions Hypertonic saline soaked peeling combined with MMC in the treatment of primary pterygium can decrease the recurrence rate, improve epithelia recovering time of corneal wound. It is simple, safe and effective,is worthy of promotion and application. Key words: Pterygium; Hypertonic saline; Mitomycin C
