Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy of two different methods for the treatment of primary pterygium. Methods Sixty eyes of 60 patients with primary pterygium were randomly divided into two groups with 30 eyes in each group.Group A received routine pterygium excision combined with limbal stem cell transplantation.Group B received pterygium with conjunctiva excision combined with limbal stem cell transplantation. The followed up time was 6 months. Surgery time, corneal wound healing time and recurrence rate were compared between the two groups. Results The average surgery time of group B (19.8±2.23)min was shorter than that of group A (25.10±3.18)min.The difference was statistically significant(t=7.613, P=0.000). The cornea recovery time was (3.5±0.73)d in group A and (3.3±0.75)d in group B. The difference was statistically significant between two groups(t=1.046, P=0.300). The recurrent occurred in 2 eyes(6.7%) of group A and no patient recurred in group B, the difference in recurrence rate was not significant between two groups(χ2=2.842, P=0.246). Conclusion Pterygium with conjunctiva excision combined with limbal stem cell transplantation is easier to perform and save time. Key words: Pterygium; Limbal stem cell transplantation; Conjunctiva
