Abstract

A detailed hydrogen ion budget was developed for the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, in W. Thornton, New Hampshire, U.S.A. Hydrogen ion sources (2541 eq H + ha -1 yr -1 ) were found to approximately balance hydrogen ion sinks (2428 eq H + ha -1 yr -1 ). Atmospheric hydrogen ion inputs contributed 52% of the total hydrogen ion sources for the ecosystem. Based on this budget, projections of changes in precipitation hydrogen ion loading on water quality were made. Changes in H 2 SO 4 precipitation inputs would have more influence on water quality than HNO 3 inputs. DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1982.tb01817.x
