Abstract

According to Islamic philosophers, who deal with the existence and nature of God, man can only reach information on metaphysical realm through the mind. For this reason, Nafs has always been considered as more precious than the body. Philosophers like al-Kindī, al-Fārābī, Ihkwān al-Safa’ (Ihvan-i Safa), Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna) constantly emphasized the path to be followed by the individual, and the importance of this path for the maturation of Nafs. Because this maturity that is obtained in the world determines the situation of the person in the Hereafter. For this reason, one of the most frequently discussed subjects is the condition of the Nafs in the Hereafter. In this study, we will try to determine the approach of Ihwān-i Safa to the most controversial issue of eschatology, whether the resurrection is a bodily or spiritual by considering the ideas of Ihkwān al-Safa’ on the afterlife. Our basic claim is that, although Ihkwān al-Safa’ did not state it clearly, they accept that the life after death would be spiritual. We will try to make this claim by interpreting the discursive knowledge as a part of the epistemology of Ihkwān al-Safa’ and their interpretations of the verses.
