Abstract
ABSTRACT This study looked into Nigerian newspapers’ reportage of the #Endsars protest with the aim of ascertaining the extent of adherence or non-adherence to the protest paradigm. A total of 216 articles were examined from three newspapers namely the Punch, Daily Post and Vanguard newspapers. The story trigger, frames and sources used for covering the #Endsars protest constituted the objectives of the study. Findings revealed that spontaneous news events triggered more reports than other triggers. It was further revealed that the riot frame was the most used frame in reporting the #Endsars protest while the protest target’s voice was heard more in the reports. Based on these findings, it was concluded that Nigerian newspapers adhered to the protest paradigm in their coverage of the #Endsars protest. It was further recommended that journalists be trained on how to report sensitive issues like protests in the areas of voices to be allowed and frames used and that further studies should be carried out using a larger sample of media genre and the protest type as data generated for the present study are limited to make room for generalisation.
