Abstract
This report deals with the role of the gonads and adrenal glands in the sexual behaviour of male and female rats and with the site of action of testosterone in this respect. Whereas ovariectomy results in immediate abolition of sexual receptivity, some orchidectomized rats have been shown to demonstrate complete patterns of male sex behaviour up to 5 months postoperatively, although most animals have ceased to show ejaculatory behaviour after one month. The behaviour of castrates is characterized by a low degree of sexual arousal although, once mating is initiated, orgasm is achieved with fewer intromissions and often with a shorter latency. Neither prior sexual experience nor the presence of adrenal steroids had any effect on this postcastrational behaviour in males. Similarly, adrenalectomy studies failed to demonstrate any role of the adrenals in the sexual behaviour of intact males.
