Abstract

The purpose of the study is the social situation of domestic workers in connection with the eradication processes in the cities of Ukraine. The article is devoted to the little-studied problem in Ukrainian historiography. Scientific novelty. This is the first attempt in Ukrainian historiography to describe the daily life of Ukrainian maids as a separate social layer. Methods. The author studies the social status of the "invisible" social group - servants using historical-anthropological approaches to understanding history. At that time, women were not able to find a good job in the city and were subjected to exploitation and inequality. Homework was one of the few ways for women to adapt in hostile cities. Conclusions. Many maidens worked illegally, without agreements, and this was the main cause of conflicts. The servants did not have their own dwelling and lived in apartments together with employers. The servants received more power in the home space, but in the public sphere her social situation was very low.
