Abstract
This chapter provides an overview, classification, brief description of each class, and known adverse effects upon exposure to chemical warfare agents (CWA). Medical management and treatment that currently constitute protocols of the military strategists, first responders, and medical personnel are discussed. Analytical methods, technologies, and commercially available systems for monitoring and early detection of chemical agents are also presented. This chapter surveys current and near-term detection technologies, as well as devices that are currently available to military and civilian first responders. Brief technical discussions of several detection technologies are provided, with emphasis placed in the principles of detection. Requirements imposed on detection systems by various applications and environmental needs are discussed in order to assess the devices for detection and identification of specific CWAs. A synopsis of the important aspects of chemical detection technologies and a preview on the needs of future devices for real-time detection and identification of CWAs are presented.
