Abstract

Abstract Venom from Black Mamba contains several neurotoxins which are of pharmacological interest. As a pre-study to the purification of some of these neurotoxins, a comparison of separation efficiency of four HPLC-methods, gel filtration (GFC), ion exchange chromatography (IEC), hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) and reversed phase chromatography (RPC), was undertaken. It is evident that the four methods provide very different elution patterns. HIC and IEC have similar powers of resolution, but are based on different principles of separation. The fact that HIC uses non-denaturing conditions makes it better suited for protein separations based on hydrophobicity than RPC.
