Abstract

On-load refuelling, an inherent factor in the design of the United Kingdom Civil Power Reactors, was first carried out at Bradwell Power Station in April 1963. Although information regarding dose rates around the charge/discharge machine had been measured during the movement of the active absorber material to and from the core, this did not simulate the effect of the delayed neutron spectrum from freshly withdrawn, irradiated fuel, nor could this effect be calculated with any degree of certainty.
