Abstract
The paper presents a structured overview of the literature on the hazardous material (hazmat) transportation problem of the last 45 years. Additionally, a detailed classification for the hazardous materials truck routing problem is provided. It extends existing classification schemes, reviews the historical development of research in the area of hazmat logistics and reveals recent progress. The main contribution of the paper is the discussion of the historical development and the identification of recent trends. It aims to reveal research opportunities and identifies research gaps. The paper’s focus lies on the transportation of hazmat on public roads. An extended classification scheme for different problem categories of hazmat truck transportation is developed and applied.
