Abstract

In order to estimate efficiency of ultrasonic backscattering method for measurement of hardening depth, the round bar samples of two bearing steels with various hardening depth were prepared. Backscattering amplitude patterns were obtained by averaging rectified signals of ultrasonic angle beam shear wave with changing incident positions. Samples have one or two increasing points in amplitude patterns. It was made clear that the first increasing point corresponded to depth of Shore hardness 80 to 84 where bainite structure initiates.
