Abstract

YBa 2Cu 3O 7- x crystals with reasonable dimensions (3 × 2 × 1 mm 3) were obtained in a ThO 2 crucible by combining the use of a temperature gradient with the flux growth technique. The contamination by Th is found to be very low since T c is 92 K, as observed by a thermoelectric power measurement. Color photographs are presented of optical diffraction effects obtained with white light incident on the crystal surface and related to the twinning in the a – b plane. These effects are completely different from the variety of optical effects reported in the literature. Growth spirals were observed on the a – b surface by SEM with step heights of 5 – 8 times the c-axis parameter, as measured with a profile-meter.
