Abstract

In this work a novel route for manufacturing graded ceramic coatings is described. Single or multilayer coatings can be deposited on green ceramic substrates by a simple dipping method in a bath of the suspension containing a low concentration of carrageenan and heated at 60 °C. On withdrawal at constant rate a dip-coating is formed that retains the shape at room conditions when carrageenan gelates. By means of a multi-step dipping into suspensions with different compositions, an Al 2O 3/Y-TZP graded coating is obtained that can be cosintered with the Al 2O 3 substrate.
