Abstract
Abstract The Scottish Development Agency (SDA) was established in 1975 to facilitate economic development, maintenance and growth of employment, and environmental improvement in Scotland. At present the SDA is the major instrument of the Conservative Government's economic policy in Scotland, and is responsible for a wide variety of initiatives. These include ‘Locate in Scotland’, the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal Project and other area‐based projects. The government has recently carried out a review of the SDA in order to increase its efficiency and effectiveness. The review paid particular attention to whether the policies of the SDA conformed to the government's own approach to economic development. The review effectively represents a vote of confidence in the SDA and confirms the nature of economic development in Scotland in the foreseeable future.
