Abstract
Geopolitics is a twentieth century expression rooted in nineteenth century European politics. The word was crafted around the turn of the century by a Swedish university professor who also had an interest in the politics of his country. It was picked up by German geographers and made into a household name by Karl Haushofer who directed a journal dedicated to the world views propagated by geopolitics. These supposedly lacked the usual Kirchturmschattenbeschraenktheit that inhibited German politics and the informed public but gave access to the grand design behind the day-to-day skirmishes in public affairs.
