Abstract
Two methods to generate sub-picosecond X-ray pulses using the electron beam of the BESSY-II storage ring in combination with a femtosecond laser are discussed: (1) Thomson scattering of laser pulses crossing electron bunches at a small angle. (2) Energy-modulation of a short region within an electron bunch interacting with the laser in an undulator, and subsequent emission of synchrotron radiation.
