Abstract

Functional diversity (FD) measures aim to quantify the diversity of functional traits within species assemblages. FD has been separated into three components: (1) functional richness – the amount of functional trait space filled; (2) functional evenness – the evenness of abundance distribution in filled trait space; and (3) functional divergence – the degree to which abundance is distributed toward the extremities of filled trait space. Most FD measures can be assigned to one of these three components. FD measures may act either as indicators of ecosystem functions, or community assembly processes, though only a fraction of their potential as indicators has been explored.
