Abstract
The origin and subsequent diversification of the angiosperms have been poorly understood even though they are of enormous significance to our ecosystem. Together, they have become known as the “abominable mystery” of Charles Darwin. Considerable effort has been focused on understanding these phenomena. Despite emphasis on the glamorous problem of angiosperm origins, no clear ancestral group has yet been identified. More progress has been made in understanding the pattern of radiation in the flowering plants and its implications as angiosperm history has been illuminated through a better understanding of germane fossil evidence and its integration with breakthroughs in molecular genetics.
