Abstract
New optical neural computing devices consisting of a thin film with graded refractive index distribution are described. Neural signal processing is controlled by an inhomogeneous refractive index distribution in a very small region in this device. We investigate the inhomogeneous index distribution of waveguide-type neural coupling devices for the cases where the neural signals correspond to Gaussian beams. The neural coupling characteristics attained by applying the inhomogeneous index distributions are evaluated.
