Abstract

Phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs) are the most mature, fuel flexible and commercially viable fuel cells. They operate in a temperature range of 150–225°C which allows for the use of commonly available materials such as Carbon, Graphite, PTFE, Stainless steel in the manufacture of cells and stacks. PAFC's have demonstrated unrivaled 80,000+h of field operation on the same cell and stack. PAFC's can tolerate significant load cycling without significant impact to durability. PAFC cell cost has significantly come down in the past decade and continues to further come down as volumes increase. As the world moves toward Hydrogen as sustainable fuel, PAFC's can provide greater than 50% efficiency. This places PAFC as the best system for performance, durability, and cost among all available types of fuel cells.
