Abstract

Niklas Strüver studies the sociotechnical relations that surround the voice assistant Alexa and the smart home it inhabits. In this, he identifies efforts made by Amazon to standardize and influence the building practices of smart home device manufacturers. This qualitative analysis develops a model to understand how Amazon leverages Alexa as a platform and infrastructure for these companies and adds to the platform and infrastructure discourse around smart home technologies.
