Abstract
This is not an essay about tolerance as an end in itself; nor does it search for ways to extend the current model of tolerance in the post-industrial world. Rather, this essay explores the implosion of tolerance politically in the United States, how in the name of tolerance, according to Herbert Marcuse, “its most effective manifestations serv[e] the cause of oppression,” and the ways that tolerance can regain its (potentially) progressive nature.
