Abstract

In this paper, I trace my professional journey and highlight two major themes in relation to my path into a wholly unexpected career as a university faculty member: (a) contextual influences in shaping my academic/career cognitions and opportunities that paved the way into an academic career and (b) challenges that I have faced as a woman of color in academia. I share my experiences with infertility and suffering the deeply painful loss of a child and how it affected my relation with work. The paper concludes with recommendations for feminist mentorship for faculty working with Latina students.
