Abstract
In their potentially wide-reaching paper, Adler and Harzing (this issue) demonstrate that journal ranking systems are imbued with conundrums which have undermined the fundamental purpose of social scientific research to make sense of the world. The authors reveal the folly of journal ranking, examining a number of detrimental consequences upon meaningful work and several constituent academic processes such as research, publishing, funding, doctoral training, and career progression. They go on to recommend a number of steps that can be taken in order to ameliorate ill-conceived methods of ranking papers, journals, and institutions of research.
