When Bouncing Back Is Harmful: Exploring the Dark Side of Resilience in PhD Management Students
In this paper, we investigate how PhD management students build individual resilience in the face of difficulties encountered during their PhD journey. While extant studies show that success in the doctoral journey is influenced by tenacity, hard work, and self-awareness, the potential pitfalls that PhD management students may face in building individual resilience have been relatively less explored. Addressing this gap is even more critical because of the increasing expectations embedded in the competitive culture of business schools, which expose PhD management students to unique challenges such as isolation, lack of solidarity, and dehumanization. Based on an exploratory empirical study of PhD management students, we theorize how these students respond to adversity through two types of practices: bright and dark. We argue that while bright practices improve individual resourcefulness that might be mobilized the next time adversity is encountered, dark practices do not contribute to this aspect and can even be damaging for individuals who engage in them. Dark practices may be destructive, cause suffering, and make resilience less likely in the future. Our study contributes to the ongoing discussion of management education by providing practical recommendations that focus on fostering PhD management students’ resilience.

PurposeResilience development during university can increase the likelihood of positive employment outcomes for project management graduates in what is known as a stressful profession where the prevalence of project failure, job insecurity, and burnout is high. However, a focus on student resilience in project management education is scarce. The purpose of this paper is to address this gap by establishing a baseline profile of resilience for project management students, identifying priority areas of resilience development and exploring the relationship between resilience and well-being.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 292 Australian students undertaking project management studies completed a survey comprising of the Resilience at University scale, the Short Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale and an item assessing sleep adequacy.FindingsA resilience profile for undergraduate, postgraduate, male and female project management students was calculated. The resilience profile identified differences according to gender, and between undergraduate and postgraduate students. Mental well-being and adequate sleep were found to be significantly related to resilience.Practical implicationsFindings support the call for a greater emphasis on resilience development in the project management curriculum for undergraduates and postgraduates. One priority area likely to facilitate resilience is the ability to maintain perspective. As well as supporting academic achievement, it will assist graduates to navigate through complex, uncertain and challenging project environments.Originality/valueThis is the first known study of resilience for students undertaking project management studies in higher education.

Development of resilience at university prepares construction management students for career success. This is especially important as construction is known as a demanding industry in which its workers experience high levels of stress and poor well-being. The resilience and well-being of construction management students in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States were explored. Three hundred and sixty-six undergraduates completed a survey. Resilience and well-being were measured using the Resilience at University scale, Short Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, Subjective Happiness Scale and the emotional exhaustion component of the Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale – Student Survey. Students from the United States had the highest level of resilience followed by Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong. Of the four countries, students from Hong Kong had the lowest level of well-being. Findings identified that resilience is a predictor of student well-being, highlighting the importance of building students’ resilience through the construction management curricula. The results suggest that the development and nurturing of resilience at university should be considered in the context of country. As resilience is a transferable skill, efforts to facilitate resilience development will support students to transition, adapt and thrive in the demanding construction industry.

Indonesia is a country that is located between two continents and two oceans, where the volcanic mountain paths meet, namely the Pacific Circum and the Mediterranean Circum, is one of the countries that has a large enough disaster potential. But on the other hand, this condition has a logical consequence that Indonesia is a country that has a high level of vulnerability to natural disasters. West Java itself is one of the areas prone to natural disasters. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that there were 8 provinces that were most frequently hit by disasters during the 2016 period, West Java ranked third after Central Java and East Java.Analyze the level of resilience of disaster management before and after being given the Simulation method and knowing the role of high school students in disaster management using the simulation method. The research method used a quantitative analysis design, with a Quasi Experimental research design with Pre and Post-Experimental measuring the resilience of students who received simulation exercises without a control group. Sampling used the Simple Random Sampling technique with the criteria of Grade 10 and Grade 11 students as many as 30 students at SMA Negeri I Parongpong, Lembang, West Badung Regency. The instrument used in the study used the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) questionnaire. The results of the study showed that there were differences in the perceptions of youth in disaster management and the role of senior high school students in resilience before and after the stimulation method was used. The simulation method is more effective in increasing resilience to disaster management.

<p style="text-align:justify">The aim of this research is to examine the psychological resilience levels of students studying in the Faculty of Sports Sciences according to some variables. The sample of the study consisted of Sports Sciences Faculty students of Duzce University, and the population consisted of 200 students from the Sports Sciences Faculty selected through a convenience sampling method. An eight-item personal information form developed by the researcher for demographic characteristics and ‘‘Short form of resilience scale’’ to determine resilience levels of participants were used. According to data obtained, while resilience levels, grades, gender, branch, department, age, and income variables of participants did not show a significant difference (p>0,05), it showed a significant difference according to sports age and place of living variables (p<0,05). Besides it was determined that resilience scores of male participants were higher than females, and team athletes had higher scores than individual athletes, lower classes had higher scores than upper classes, sports management students had higher scores than coaching and physical education and sports teaching students, and students who had younger age had higher scores than students who had older age. As a result of research, it was determined that resilience could be differed by class, sports age, residence variables. Also, it was revealed that sports age affects resilience negatively.</p>
