Abstract

This article analyses the frivolous dimension in the novel Don Sylvio of Rosalva. Placing the concept of frivolity in the context of the European Enlightenment makes it possible to analyse Don Sylvio’s inability to understand the erotic language of the other characters in the novel. After highlighting the role of rococo aesthetics in the various representations of sensuality and its connection with French libertine literature, the article concludes with an examination of philosophical questions raised about conceptions of love, fidelity and virtue.
