Abstract
A classical friction model is presented for the description of heavy-ion induced fusion and deep inelastic nuclear reactions. The model is compared with the available experimental data, most of which were obtained after the parameters of the model had been fixed. A microscopic theory of the friction force involved is given and is compared to the findings of the phenomenological model. The agreement is close.
