Abstract

Heavy ion collisions leading to fusion or deep inelastic direct reactions are described by a simple classical model. The ions are assumed to move along classical trajectories under the influence of frictional forces. With the use of only two parameters fixed simultaneously for all systems the systematics of the existing data on fusion cross sections and deep inelastic collisions could be reproduced. Especially the model gives a simple explanation of the focussing effect observed in Kr-induced deep inelastic collisions. The amount of energy loss observed in these collisions is qualitatively reproduced but quantitatively still differs considerably.KeywordsClassical TrajectoryFusion BarrierTangential FrictionDeep Inelastic CollisionCritical Angular MomentumThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
