Abstract

Sigmund Freud was one of the most exceptional protagonists in the Vienna fin-de-siecle, a city that is symbolic not only of the so called Finis Austriae but of a deep crisis in the modern condition too. The filosofical interest of this period focuses to a big extent on the links between subjectivity and language. This article is an attempt of reconstruct the cultural milieu where the freudian psychoanalysis could be shaped. My reading tries to compare the freudian visions on language as main problem with some of the most representative fictional and essayistical works on Habsburg Empire’s End –“the Gay Apocalypse”, so called Broch the period from 1848 to 1918– by Freud’s contemporaries like Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Karl Kraus, or the already mentioned Hermann Broch. In these pages I evaluate the contributions of these Austro-Hungarian intellectuals to arts, social theory and literary criticism, resulting in a little map of Freud’s Vienna.
