Abstract

A cross between the comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles by United States film director John Hughes and French writer Jules Verne's classic adventure novel Around the World in Eighty Days, SEG's Distinguished Lecture (DL) and Honorary Lecture (HL) series had another successful year in 2012 with many important new connections made and old friendships reestablished. SEG has long promoted the real-time exchange of recent technical advances with its DL series, supported by CGG and Paradigm. This was Paradigm's first year as a supporter, initiating a five-year commitment of $50,000 per year. Each year, two Distinguished Lecturers are chosen to present their topic at global locations. In addition to being a major honor, the position is an active effort to promote geophysics, stimulate general scientific and professional interest, expand technical horizons, and provide world-wide connections.
