Abstract

Phases in the PbO-Nb2O5 system were synthesized by reaction of amorphous Nb2O5 with PbC2O5. The pyrochlore Pb2.31Nb2O7.21 is kinetically favoured up to at least 700 C. whereas cubic Pb3Nb4O13 is not formed as a pure phase. When Fe is incorporated into the pyrochlore structure the Pb Nb O formation is accelerated. The oxygen vacancies created by the Fe insertion enable the structure to receive more PbO up to the composition Pb4(Fe Nb ) O which corresponds to the ideal pyrochlore A.B.O.
