Abstract

The microstructures of a spray deposited 2024 aluminium alloy in the hot rolled condition were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that there exist amorphous and quasicrystalline phases in the spray deposited preform, and neither metastable phase is able to undergo structural change in the 400 °C as-rolled condition, showing high termal stability. A reasonable mechanism for the formation of both metastable phases is described using a spray model.
