Abstract

The formation of low dimensional superparamagnetic α-MnO2 nano structures is achieved by the reduction of KMnO4 with Na2S2O3·5H2O and capping with the organic ligand triethylamine. On addition of Na2S2O3·5H2O with triethylamine in KMnO4, a dark-brown hydrated precipitate was obtained. The precipitate was analyzed using DSC-TG, which indicates that the material dehydrates to form α-MnO2 nanowire at 573 K. The XRD confirmed tetragonal phase and crystalline nature of the product. The presence of functional groups and stretching vibrations of Mn–O and Mn–O–Mn were detected using FTIR. The morphology and nano size of the material were analyzed using FE-SEM. The hysteresis loop for α-MnO2 by VSM shows the superparamagnetic property of the material due to the formation of single domain system and nano size effect.
