Foreword to C. Th. Dimaras Annual Lecture, 2019

In February 2005 the Third Annual University of London Kolmogorov Lecture was held at Royal Holloway. These annual lectures were established in 2003. The lecture was given by Professor Per Martin-Löf of Stockholm University—one of the world's foremost researchers in the field of constructive mathematics. Professor Martin-Löf was presented with the Kolmogorov Lecture medal in recognition of his contribution to mathematical logic. Professor Alex Gammerman, Director of Royal Holloway's Computer Learning Research Centre, said: ‘The annual lectures are devoted to Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov (1903–1987) who was one of the foremost Soviet mathematicians of the Twentieth Century. He was active in many mathematical fields, with interests in both theory and application. The work of Kolmogorov is the basis of Complexity Science: he made one of the most beautiful discoveries of the 20th century—what is now known as Kolmogorov Complexity or Algorithmic Information Theory. This discovery is crucial to the great advances currently being made in machine learning, and particularly here at Royal Holloway's world-renowned Computer Learning Research Centre. We have established the annual Kolmogorov Lecture to acknowledge the profound importance of his research. For many years A. N. Kolmogorov was head of the mathematical logic department at Moscow State University, and Per Martin-Löf studied under his supervision in 1964–65’.

On November 19, 2017, the eighth annual Analytic Theology Lecture was delivered in Boston, Massachusetts by N.T. Wright before the American Academy of Religion. His lecture, titled “The Meanings of History: Event and Interpretation in the Bible and Theology,” is printed here for the first time.

Yaksh, PhD, MS a member of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Yaksh's formidable career has focused on the mechanisms of pain, and he has made many observations and discoveries that have advanced the field. Tony is well-known for being a collaborative and generous colleague who has promoted the careers of many. Prior to arriving at UC San Diego in 1988, Dr. Yaksh served in the U.S. Army, then spent time at the University of Wisconsin, University College London, and Mayo Clinic Rochester investigating mechanisms of opiates and non-opiates in the modification of central nervous system pain processing, studying basic physiology of unmyelinated fibers of the nervous system, and investigating neurotransmitter release. EDITOR'S SUMMARYIn the modern age of the internet, computers and smartphones, we have access to incredible amounts of information. However, often what we seek from this information is knowledge, which can be expressed as raw information that has been reproduced and curated. Professor Steve Fuller discussed this divide at the 2016 ASIS&T Annual Lecture at Napier University on November 30. Fuller discusses the idea that raw information must be curated and edited in order to express actual knowledge, but in the act of reproducing the information for this purpose, data can become distorted and omitted. Fuller cites Wikileaks as a source of raw information that was handed to media outlets to edit and present as knowledge. Wikipedia is another domain that has become one of the most cited centers of knowledge, but allows anyone to curate information and remains unstudied as a whole.
