Abstract

The evolution of Food Policy in the United Kingdom is traced from the Repeal of the Corn Laws to the onset of Brexit. The way the meaning and scope of the subject has changed and developed over time is explored and it is argued that in the UK this has gone hand in hand with shifts in the emphasis allocated to different food policy issues. Three main phases in this evolution are identified and labeled: “UK Food Policy and Trade Policy”; “UK Food Policy and the European Community”; and “UK Food Policy and Food Safety”.
