Abstract

A bidimensional thin layer chromatography (B.T.L.C.) purification process was adapted for the fluorometric assay of corticosterone in bird plasma and adrenal tissue. The degree of purification obtained is such that this simple, rapid and sensitive technique may replace the double isotope dilution technique for the accurate assay of corticosterone. The main steps are the following: — Extraction of the corticosteroids. — Purification by B.T.L.C. — Evaluation [radioactive tracer] of the recovery level, and fluorometric assay. This technique was used for a physiological approach of adrenal cortical activity in birds.
