Abstract
Mass transfer experiments were carried out in packed beds of spheres of low tube-to-particle diameter ratio (3 ⩽ d t p ⩽ 12) to determine, by analogy, the fluid-phase contribution to the heat transfer effective radial Peclet number and the apparent wall Biot number. The asymptotic Peclet number was shown to be between 8 and 11 for the entire d t d p range, contradicting standard correlations. A correlation for the wall Sherwood number is given that extends those of previous studies: Sh wf = (1.0−1.5( d p d t ) 1.5)(Sc) 1 3 (Re) 0.59 . These results are in good agreement with data obtained directly from heat transfer experiments.
