Abstract
A flow-injection system is proposed for the rapid determination of trace amounts of formaldehyde based on its inhibition of the Brilliant Green—sulphite reaction at pH 7. Formaldehyde in the range 40–3000 ng ml −1 can be determined at a rate of 35 ± 5 samples h −1. The limit of detection was 20 ng ml −1. The relative standard deviation for the determination of 1 μg ml −1 formaldehyde was 0.2%. The method was applied to the determination of formaldehyde in melamine—formaldehyde resin and chemical industrial waste water.
