Abstract

Research on the study population walnut is particularly intensified in the last four decades, primarily in the former Yugoslavia, now Serbia. As a result of this work were recognized five varieties of walnuts and few promising selections that are in the process of recognition. Due to the continuing generative reproduction, the population of walnut is very heterogeneous. Differences were observed in the beginning of the growing season and over 50 days, and the end of the growing season is about 32 days. Fruit weight was 3.3 g to 29.0 g, while the kernel percentage ranged from 26.2% to 64.3%. Number of female flowers in one inflorescence varied from 1 to 32 colors, while the number of fruits per cluster was up to 15 Analyzing the population of walnut in Serbia, it can be seen that the predominant genotypes of bad traits, but also that it is possible to extract and genotype outstanding characteristics typical, which is given as a result of the five recognized varieties and more promising selections of nuts. So far in Serbia built over 2,000 ha plantation under our varieties and selections. Largest plantation in a complex of 84 hectares and is situated in Lipar, about 70 km south of Novi Sad. This paper presents the characteristics of the population of walnut in Serbia, the properties of selected varieties and selections.
