Abstract

An understanding of the relationship between school-children’s posture and their school seating can promote their health and education. The objective of this research is to evaluate existing school chairs and suggest alternative designs. One hundred and twenty five teachers were randomly selected to participate in questionnaire research. The anthropometric dimensions and postures of fourth graders from Seoul (175) and Pusan (109) and the dimensions of their chairs and desks were measured, and photographed. New values of sasyaku and desk height (not specified in Korean Industrial Standards (KS)) are proposed. Korean Industrial Standards (KS) address design of school chairs and desks and specify values for sasyaku. This research indicates that provision of sasyaku does not ensure that fourth grade students are accommodated.
