Abstract

Countries need to take various precautions to meet the need for food that increases due to population growth and fast consumption of nutrition sources. Marine products have an important place among decreasing sources. Fish farming not only helps meet the need for protein, but also creates a significant economic sector. Developing rapidly in our country, fish farming is conducted both in seas and freshwater. Particularly trout farming in freshwater stands out. This study focuses on the potential for fish farming in Pınarbaşı and its vicinity. The Zamantı River, one of the main tributaries of the Seyhan River, takes its source from Uzunyayla located in the northeast of Pınarbaşı. Animal husbandry and agricultural activities are the primary means of livelihood. However, the variety of products is limited in Uzunyayla due to harsh continental climate conditions. Trout farming becomes more and more common in this region where means of livelihood are limited. The water conditions of the Zamantı River and its tributaries, favorability of some water parameters, and eligibility of environmental conditions are natural geographical factors that enable fish farming to emerge and develop as an economic activity in Pınarbaşı and its vicinity. Trout processing and feed factories and trout farms, established as a result of fish farming in the region, provide employment and also contribute to the economy of the country in that they create export opportunities.
