Abstract

This article presents an overview of various issues related to curriculum in first language learning from kindergarten through secondary school. The particular focus of this article is on language and literacy education in English. Included is a consideration of issues such as the position of the language of schooling to other languages, early childhood first language instruction, home, community and school language and literacy practices, controversies in reading instruction in the primary grades, children's literature, process and genre approaches to writing instruction, secondary language curricula, the effect of streaming in the secondary English classroom, digital literacies, and new media.
