Abstract
ABSTRACT Asecond generation finite element model (FEM) was used to analyze the stress field in grain storage bins filled with wheat. Distribution of lateral and vertical stresses in a deep bin (9 m high x 3 m dia) and a shallow bin (9 m high x 9 m dia) were predicted for both static and thermal loading conditions. Predicted lateral to vertical stress ratio (k) and principal stress direction varied with grain depth and bin radial distance in both bins. Predicted static pressure ratios were as much as 13.7% higher than Rankine values. The thermally induced pressure ratios were as much as 62.8% higher than Rankine values.
