Abstract

Suspension spring is the imperative segment of moving body to assimilate shock and vibration. This paper discusses the finite element analysis of helical suspension spring of rail vehicle to discover its fatigue life. Fatigue analysis has been carried out using finite element method to explore the impact of dynamic loading on the failure of suspension spring. This analysis revealed that the suspension spring has finite life and due to which spring failure occurs earlier. To avoid these failures some modifications are suggested in the suspension system and one of them is incorporated by loco shed and it is found that primary suspension spring failures are reduced by 88%. This modification is also incorporated by other loco sheds and the results are encouraging.
