Abstract

The present numerical study was carried out to investigate the ballistic performance and energy absorption characteristic of sandwich structure with foam core. The sandwich structure with constant span of 76 mm comprised of 1 mm thick AL 1100-H12 face sheet and 20 mm thick ALPORAS foam core. Finite element modelling performed by using ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The Johnson cook and orthotropic Honeycomb material model was used to model the impact behaviour of face sheet and foam core. Also the parametric study performed to study the effect of projectile nosed shape (ogive, blunt, conical and hemispherical) on residual velocity, ballistic limit, failure mode and energy absorption. The selected model was accurately captured the complex physical during high velocity impact. Moreover the obtained numerical results were found to be in good agreement with the observed results from the available literature survey. Also the ogive nose projectile was found to be efficient penetrator compared to other three projectile.
