Abstract
The classical trajectory Monte Carlo method has been used tosimulate fully stripped ion-circular Rydberg atom collisions. We report that the mechanisms that govern the capture processfor ions colliding with aligned Rydberg targets, namely directand indirect velocity matching, alternate as to which isdominant. Previous experimental and theoretical results forsingly charged ion-Rydberg atom collisions demonstrate thatdirect capture processes dominate at intermediate collisionspeeds. We have found that for highly charged ion-Rydberg atomcollisions electron capture via indirect velocity matching isdominant at intermediate collision speeds and contributes up to90% of the total capture cross-section.
