Abstract

Fibre-optic Fabry-Perot strain gauges are embedded in unidirectional laminates subject to longitudinal stress for the purpose of determining their phase-strain response. The laminated coupons used were Kevlar/epoxy and graphite/polyetheretherketone. Cantilever-beam bending was used to load the coupons while monitoring the phase of the fibre-optic strain gauges. The phase-strain response was found to be repeatable, linear and symmetric with respect to tension and compression. The phase-strain sensitivity was found to be the same as that predicted by a free-fibre uniaxial stress model.
