Abstract
Size reduction in nanoscale magnetic device is becoming increasingly challenge due to the superparamagnetic limit. Ordered L10 FePt phase has been proposed as the most promising candidate for applications of nanoscale devices due its large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This article reviews the state of the art for the FePt thin films applicable to magnetic recording media and other applications. The fundamentals of the L10 ordering and magnetic properties of the FePt are first described. Then, challenges relating to the integration of FePt thin films into perpendicular magnetic recording media are introduced. More importantly, the current state of researches into FePt applications on advanced magnetic recording techniques including heat assisted magnetic recording, exchange-coupled composite and graded media, and bit patterned media is discussed. Finally, review of other FePt-based applications including biomaterials, permanent magnets, and spintronic devices is provided.
