Abstract

This paper describes how the Portuguese prestige papers Publico and Diario de Noticias reacted to the attack that killed the Brazilian diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, representative of the United Nations in Iraq. The author concludes that the Portuguese quality papers, Publico in particular, had personalized the coverage of the attack, centring it in Sergio Vieira de Mello, which helped to construct a heroic image of the diplomat.
